"Fast-paced, entertaining read ... a charming main character and a diverting plot sure to appeal to fans of whodunit novels." -- KIRKUS REVIEW
Last year was one heck of a ride for 12-year old Mary Frances (“Frankie”) Jackson. She was an inning away from becoming the first female all-state middle-school pitcher … until a teammate double-crossed her. Then, she was arrested after she sought revenge against the double-crosser. And to top it off, her dad was banished from the family home after falling off the wagon. Now, she’s been sent to California for the summer to live on a houseboat with her Aunt Roxy. There’s one catch -- she can’t get in trouble or it’s back to New Jersey and juvenile detention camp.
Too bad that days after arriving at the houseboat community, Frankie lands in hot water. Accused of animal cruelty (killing a cat), and with the evidence stacked against her, she has two weeks to prove her innocence. Frankie turns to a houseboat resident, Margie Britt, a washed out 70s TV star who used to solve mysteries on TV.
But as the days pass, Frankie loses faith in Margie and initiates her own investigation. In the process she gets to know all of the eccentrics on the dock. There’s Forgetting Michael, a young disabled man, who forgets things whenever a loud noise goes off; Alice, an 82-year old activist who loves birds and hates cats; and there’s Butch, a German shepherd whose owner has a shady past. Frankie even learns the sad truth about Kay, her accuser.
Ultimately, with help of Margie, Roxy, and her new houseboat friends, Frankie proves her innocence. But more importantly, Frankie learns how to deal with her own anger and frustration from the past year’s events.
I Didn’t Kill Your Cat is a young adult novel with a tough, lovable, heroine and an intriguing setting – the houseboats of Sausalito

I see that most of the negative reviews written on this site complain that the mystery is written from the viewpoint of a 12-year-old. That is precisely why my review headline includes the word "charming"--because the viewpoint is part of what makes this mystery work. The setting, a houseboat dock in San Francisco, is intriguing; the lively cast of characters is quirky and different. Red herrings abound, and when the mystery-within-the-mystery (the reason that the main character has been placed on house arrest) is revealed, one feels enormous sympathy for this young person. And I frankly don't understand why the occasional naiveté and discovery of life facts by the young narrator should be anything less than entertaining; I found myself grinning frequently. In fact, the "voice" from which the novel is written is more mature and realistic than many of the "romance disguised as a cozy" narrators in numerous mysteries I've punished myself by reading, and the theme of sexual harassment is certainly timely. The only complaint I have at all about the book is the formatting (perhaps just on the Kindle edition), because usually a break in action, environment or time is indicated by a double space between paragraphs. That formatting was absent. This would, indeed, be a delightful mystery for parents and/or grandparents to read alongside their children. That doesn't mean that an adult cannot enjoy the book for her or himself--after all, how many of us devoured the pages of "Harry Potter"?

I Didn't Kill Your Cat Frankie Jackson Mystery Book 1 eBook R Stim Reviews
This is a fun read. I think was written as a YA, but I really enjoyed it. The young heroine is entirely believable. She overcomes adult prejudices and becomes her own person in her own way with the help of some colorful adult characters help.
This is a very unusual but really interesting book and I recommend it to all ages from early teen to senior citizens. It was kind of aggravating at times but those times made it more interesting so regardless of what age you are, I think you will enjoy reading this book.
A troubled teen learns a lifetime of lessons in one summer. Things aren't always what they seem.
This was a very interesting story...although it was from a child's viewpoint, everyone could benefit from the lessons to be learned that were presented in the tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. I even learned a few interesting things myself and I'm 62..
Picked this one out for my 11-yr old G-daughter's new , and thought I should read it first myself. It was fun enough to keep me reading, and real enough to make me glad I didn't pass it up. The mystery of who killed the cat is very well handled, and with a 12-yr old protagonist as the star, I know my G-daughter is going to love it.
This seems like it will be a cute story and is off to a good start. I like how it wastes no time and jumps right into the story right off the bat. We see the main character, what I assume will be most of the supporting cast, and the primary conflict - all in the first few pages. The style is appropriate for the age of the intended audience. I liked the mystery over who did indeed kill the cat, because I trust the main character is telling the truth. I also like the suspense created over not wanting her to get in trouble back home for a crime she didn't commit, and the mystery of not knowing what exactly she did at home that could have landed her in such serious hot water that a twelve-year-old would be under house arrest. The only problem I had was I wished the author would divulge the age of the main character sooner. I had a feeling it was a younger kid but when the subject of her trial back home came up that threw me for a loop, thinking maybe she was older than I thought, only to find out almost at the very end of the excerpt that I my original assumption was correct. Other than that, I liked the story and think younger readers will enjoy it as well. Good luck in the contest!
Twelve-year-old Mary Frances "Frankie" Jackson had a brush with the law in her hometown of Toms River, New Jersey, and her mother sent her to stay with "Aunt" Roxy on her houseboat in Sausalito, California. Now Frankie has been accused of killing the neighbor's cat. Frankie sets out to find the real cat-killer to clear her name.
Although this is a book for young adults, I found it very entertaining.
